Spring is the perfect time to get ready for summer and it’s also the perfect time to apply for Christmas casual jobs! To save you time and effort, we’ve researched Christmas casual jobs and found 40 that are great for students.
To make sure you successfully land a Christmas casual job this summer, check out our helpful tips below.
Tip 1 : Apply early!
Don’t apply for a Christmas job in Christmas! It’s all over by then. Before you start a summer job, you will often need to go through a recruitment process including online forms and face-to-face interviews. After that, you will most likely need to attend a training day where you will learn the skills you’ll need for the job.
Many places have deadlines coming up, so the best tip is to start applying today!
Tip 2: Presentation is Everything
Presentation is key to making a lasting impression. If you make it to the face-to-face interview stage, wear clothes that make you look presentable (like a new white t-shirt, jeans and clean shoes).
Then there is body language. Look the interviewer in the eye, give them a hand shake and don’t be too shy to introduce yourself properly. “Hi, my name’s Alex. Thanks for seeing me today”. If you’re looking for a job in retail, you’re going to be customer-facing. This means that you’ll need to show that you’re confident enough to talk to customers (but not so confident that you’re a know-it-all!).
Aaaagh! I’ve never done this before - what are employers even looking for? The alarm might be already going off if you haven’t done this before, but don’t freak out. Here’s a good way to prepare - switch chairs for a second - what would you be looking for if you were the boss of a retail shop?
They don’t expect you to know everything about the store, or products or the cash register system. These things can all be taught (that’s what training is for).
What they are looking for is someone who is;
Reliable - can you show you’re serious and will turn up every day on time?
Hard working - will you jump onto TikTok if your boss isn’t looking?
Good people skills - can you show that you’re confident talking to people, understanding questions and helping them find solutions?
Good news - you don’t need previous work experience to show that you have those three skills. But, your employer will ask you for examples of how you demonstrate these skills, so have them ready before you get to the face-to-face interview. To prepare for a face-to-face interview, think of examples in your life (from sport, school, community involvement, family responsibilities etc.) where you showed these skills.
