Departing Australia Superannuation Payment

If you have earned superannuation while working in Australia on a temporary visa, you may be able to have these funds released as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP).

What are the eligibility requirements?

To claim a DASP you must not be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, and have not made a valid application for a permanent Australian visa (that has not been finally determined).
Generally, you can claim a DASP if all of the following apply:
  • 1
You have accumulated superannuation while working in Australia on a temporary resident visa issued under the Migration Act 1958 (excluding subclasses 405 and 410).
  • 2
It has been less than six months since your temporary resident visa has ceased to be in effect (for example, it has expired or been cancelled).
  • 3
You have permanently left Australia within the last six months.
Note: If you are a New Zealand citizen leaving Australia permanently, you may be able to transfer your super to New Zealand under the Trans-Tasman retirement savings portability scheme for individuals.

How do you apply?

Online applications are free of charge and can be submitted through the DASP online application system operated by the ATO.
You can start your online DASP application while you are still in Australia and have all relevant information handy. But, you’ll only be able to submit it after you have left Australia and your visa has ceased to be in effect. Don’t forget to note down the information you use when you commence the online application, as you will need the same details to resume the saved application after you leave Australia.

What happens after I submit a claim?

If you successfully claim your super as a DASP, your account balance will be paid out and your account will be closed.
We will require certified copies of your proof of identification documents and bank statement as part of the application process. It is easier to certify documents while you are in Australia, so do this before you leave.

What happens if I don’t make a claim?

Your super may be transferred as an unclaimed benefit to the ATO if 6 months has elapsed since you’ve departed Australia or your visa has expired or been cancelled, and you have not requested payment of your benefit as a DASP.
Please note that if your account balance is transferred to the ATO as an unclaimed benefit, a member exit statement will not be provided as the Trustee relies on the relief from the obligation to provide exit statements to members whose benefits are compulsorily transferred to the ATO.
However, if you would like information about how to apply to the ATO to claim your benefit, the Trustee will provide you with sufficient information to do this.
